Arriving in Rio

WAC member Hans Struzyna checks in from the Olympics

Men’s eight rowing starts Monday, August 8

We are here and all settled in. Brazil is a beautiful country. The people have been accommodating, and the Olympic Village is very cool. The day we arrived was great. We landed around 10:30 am and had an easy time getting though customs and securing our bags. The bus took us directly to the village and we promptly checked in. We’ve had to work out a few kinks but all in all everything is running smoothly. The rooms are set up like suites. All of us rowers are in one area, so the whole team is just a door-knock away.

The first two days we worked out on the rowing machines. The first day because we didn’t have time to go to the course. The second day because the course was too windy to row.

We spent the majority of Monday rigging the boat and working out bus schedules, laundry service, meal times, etc. The boat is the same one we rowed in Lucerne, Switzerland, for the last-chance regatta in May. After that race, we wrapped it up and shipped it to Rio. The oars are the same, too.

Everyone is feeling very positive and morale is high. Now it is all about keeping the spear sharp and the minds focused on the task at hand.

We got on the water twice Tuesday and are happy with how we rowed the boat for the first time since Friday morning. We are happy and looking forward to what the week has in store for us. We will be doing a dry run of our race-day schedule later in the week by waking up at the proper time, taking the same bus, and just generally going through our pre-race warm-up.
